What Is a Low-Dose CT Scan?
An ultra-low-dose CT (ULDCT) scan exposes you to cosmic radiation equivalent to roughly 4 to 8 one-way nonstop flights from Singapore to London. It produces detailed images of the lungs, identifying nodules as small as 2mm that would be invisible on a chest X-ray.
Unlike a chest X-ray, which misses up to 40% of early-stage lung cancers, the landmark NLST and NELSON trials demonstrated that annual LDCT screening reduces lung cancer mortality by 20 to 24% in high-risk populations, offering up to 24% reduction in lung cancer mortality. Who Should Consider Lung Cancer Screening?
The traditional "smokers only" message is outdated. Nearly half of Singapore's lung cancer patients have never smoked.
Singapore Guidelines & Dr Harish Recommends
- Annual LDCT screening is recommended for individuals aged 50 to 80 with a 20 pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years, per guidelines published by the Academy of Medicine Singapore (January 2025). For non-smokers with a family history of lung cancer in a first or second degree relative, screening eligibility is assessed individually in discussion with a specialist. - Frequent exposure to cooking fumes (wok cooking, poor ventilation), which is a significant risk factor for Asian women
- History of tuberculosis or chronic lung disease

Note: Singapore's January 2025 guidelines formally recommend screening for high-risk smokers. Dr Harish's recommendation to screen non-smokers with risk factors aged 40+ is based on his clinical experience and the evidence base for Singapore's high non-smoker lung cancer prevalence. This is not yet a national guideline for non-smokers.
